From Almaty to Khorgos: A Journey to the Chinese Border
After the enjoyable days I spent in Almaty, it was time to leave Kazakhstan. I set off by hitchhiking towards the Kazakhstan-China border and reached the city of Khorgos. Khorgos is an important border crossing that connects Kazakhstan and China. The city is known as a place with intense trade and cross-border traffic. As soon as I arrived in Khorgos, I put my plan to cross into China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region into action.
A Day in East Turkestan: Experiences in Khorgos and Xinjiang
When I crossed into China's Xinjiang region, I immediately noticed how sensitive the situation in the area was. In this region, also known as East Turkestan, human rights violations and political pressures are frequently on the agenda. Although the atmosphere in Xinjiang made me a bit uncomfortable, during my short visit here, I had the opportunity to visit a few places and try some delicacies from Chinese cuisine. In particular, the taste of the Chinese food offered different flavors I hadn't tried before.
This one day in Khorgos gave me the opportunity to observe the situation in China's Xinjiang region. Even though my experience here was short and limited, I once again understood how difficult and complex life in East Turkestan can be. Understanding the difficulties faced by the people in the region and the political situation of the area was an unforgettable experience for me.
