My second day in China's Xinjiang region turned into a journey deep into East Turkestan. I set off hitchhiking from Khorgos toward the city of Yining, and the experiences I had during this process allowed me to see the difficulties faced by the Uyghur Turks more closely. Upon reaching Yining, I had the opportunity to both explore the city and learn details about the daily lives of the Uyghur Turks. In this article, I will share with you what I experienced on this second day in East Turkestan.
Hitchhiking from Khorgos to Yining: A Journey in the Uyghur Region
While hitchhiking from Khorgos to Yining, I had the chance to have a short but meaningful conversation with some Chinese people I met on the road. Before they knew where I was from, they said they wanted to buy my train ticket to Urumqi to help me. However, when they learned I was Turkish, they spoke among themselves for a while, and eventually, they helped me buy my ticket by giving me 200 RMB because they had given me their word. This situation once again showed the challenges of being Turkish in China and how communication between people can change in an instant.
Time Spent in Yining: The Daily Life of Uyghur Turks
When I reached Yining, I had the opportunity to explore the city until my train time. During this time, I observed what the Uyghur Turks eat, what they do, and how they carry on their daily lives. Uyghur cuisine offers a rich cultural heritage that is quite different from other parts of China. While walking the streets of Yining, I noticed the fresh vegetables, fruits, and handmade products that Uyghur Turks sell in local markets.
I also had the chance to try a few delicacies from Uyghur cuisine. Uyghur pilaf and kebabs are among the region's most famous dishes. The hospitality and warmth of the Uyghur Turks are among the biggest reasons they manage to survive despite the hardships in this region. However, the pressures and restrictions they face make their daily lives difficult, and it is not hard to see the pain caused by this situation.
Uyghur Turks and the Situation in China
This second day I spent in East Turkestan allowed me to see the oppression faced by the Uyghur Turks more closely. Although the people in this region have a deep-rooted culture and a rich history, they lead difficult lives under the pressure of the Chinese government. The short time I spent in Yining gave me the opportunity to better understand the difficulties the Uyghur Turks experience and China's policies in this region.
